2010 Omaha Post Membership Anniversaries and Awards

On December 9th the SAME Omaha Post held its Second Annual Holiday and Awards Event at the Field Club of Omaha. The Program Welcome/Introduction/Invocation was given by Gary Krupa, Omaha Post President. The Awards Ceremony was presented by Dave Packard (USACE), and Dave Henney (Mangi Environmental Group). The evening's entertainment was provided by Jordan Elsberry (Keyboard), and Mark Luebbe (Bass).

National Awards

Congratulations to the following award recipients for your outstanding achievements. The Omaha Post will assist all award recipients with their submissions to SAME National. Individuals who are selected at the National level will be announced at the SAME JETC Conference in May. Congratulations to everyone and Good Luck at National!

Goethals Medal

The SAME Goethals Medal is awarded to an SAME member for distinguished performance in the field of engineering, design or construction. The medal is named in honor of Col. George W. Goethals, USA, and was first awarded in 1956.

Eligibility: Registered engineer who was a member of SAME prior to nomination.

Criteria: Eminent and notable contributions in engineering, design, or construction in the past five years

Urbahn Medal

This SAME medal is named in honor of Max O. Urbahn, American Institute of Architects. The medal is awarded to an SAME member for distinguished performance in the field of architecture. The medal was first awarded in 1997.

Eligibility: A Registered Architect who was a member of SAME prior to nomination.

Criteria: Eminent and notable contribution in the field of architecture in the past five years.

J.W. Morris Sustaining Member Award

The J.W. Morris Sustaining Member Award is named in honor of Lt. Gen. John W. Morris, USA (Ret.). The Award was first presented to an SAME Sustaining Member company in 1981.

Eligibility: In order to be eligible for the award, an SAME Sustaining Member company in the private sector must be a Sustaining Member of at least two or more SAME Posts in each of the previous five years.

Criteria: The company appoints individuals to sustaining member representative positions for each Post affiliation; Company representatives take on leadership positions at the Post, Region and National level, including Board of Direction, standing committees and conference planning committees; Company supports Young Member participation in Society activities and mentoring programs; Company supports K-12, College Outreach and community service activities; The number of Posts supporting the nomination with validation of the company's participation during the past year (in the form of attached letters of support). The company advertises in SAME publications (The Military Engineer) and the print version of the Directory of Member Companies & Organizations). The company exhibited and sponsored activities/events at SAME National and Region Conferences.

Robert B. Flowers Small Business Member

For calendar years 2001 and 2002, SAME presented a plaque to a Small Business under the auspices of the J.W. Morris Award. In 2003, the Board of Direction separated this award from the J.W. Morris Award and established new criteria. The new Robert B. Flowers Small Business Award was first presented in 2004 for calendar year 2003 and was named after Lt. Gen. Robert B. Flowers (Ret.), USA in April 2004..

Eligibility: In order to be eligible for the award, a company must be a Sustaining Member of one SAME Post in the past three years and is a Small Business in at least one NAICS category as of the date of nomination.

Criteria: The company will be evaluated based on the extent to which during the previous calendar year:

  • The company appoints individuals to sustaining member representative positions for the Post affiliation;
  • The company Sustaining Member representatives take on leadership positions at the Post level, including Board of Direction and committees;
  • The company supports K-12, College Outreach and community service activities;
  • The company participates in Small Business programs sponsored by the Society or public agencies;
  • The company exhibited and sponsored activities/events at SAME National and Region Conferences; and
  • The company supported Young Member participation in Society activities and mentoring programs.

Nomination Process: One or more Posts may nominate a company that meets the eligibility criteria, or if the RVP selects a Small Business of the Year from the Sustaining Member companies belonging to Posts in the region, the RVP may submit the company for the award. Companies may not nominate themselves. The President, CEO, or Owner of the Company being nominated shall submit a letter with the nomination indicating under which NAICS categories the company is considered a Small Business under the Federal guidelines published by the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Post President or RVP nominating the Small Business for the award will ensure that the nomination package provides information to support some or all of the nomination criteria. Letters of endorsement from either a Post President or RVP, other than the one nominating the Company, are encouraged to support the nomination. The nomination must be received by SAME HQ by February 2.
